A short while I stumbled across this Oatmeal comic from Matthew Inman. Wow yeah, this really summarizes how I feel when I run — and when I don’t. It’s certainly one of the main reasons why I’m always drawn back to get back out there. I’ve had someone I know (a non-runner) tell me sure you get a kick when you run, but then there’s always a crash later. You may be getting higher highs but the cost is lower lows: you’re more even keeled if you don’t run at all. Well this just isn’t true.
I do remember a time when I wasn’t running regularly and what I felt like. A bit of an exaggeration, but on average it was much more like the grey panel. The way I feel after a good run (and after a crappy one too) is just one of the reasons I run, health is another major factor, plus the social aspect.
So thank-you Mathew for for capturing the feeling so well. Head over to The Oatmeal where there are more comics (including more running themed ones). There are even The Oatmeal inspired races, I may just register for one of the Beat the Blerch races in nearby Seattle.
